Your Résumé
With any résumé, there's a format that is generally accepted across all industries and trades. When applying for a particular position, keep in mind that the duties on the ad may not be the only duties you'll be performing. Make your titles strong and put your accomplishments in their best light.
When writing your résumé, use titles that match the job your applying for as much as possible. For example, if you're applying for a teachers assistant position, for a title you could use something like 'Child Care Management' as a title and highlight your accomplishments below. Dynamic titles help to catch an employer's eye.
The design of your résumé should grab the reader's attention as well. Print your résumé on a neutral color (ecru, white, gray) and make good use of white space. Many managers look at numerous résumés and only have a few moments to look at them. Make your most applicable skills noticeable at a glance.
Your skills are an important part of the résumé; they help the employer to know you are qualified to do different types of work. This is a selling point, so in your résumé, be sure to include all the skills you've obtained in your career.
The body of your résumé should have descriptions that show the diversity of your skills within a position that you've held. You also want to use power words and key words to catch the eye of the reader. For example, instead of writing 'Supervised children in a school environment', write something like this: 'Managed learning and extra-curricular activities of 12 children'. Notice the good use of the power word and key words to grab the eye of the reader.
Also include your education within your résumé, such as your schooling and any job-related training. The most recent should be listed first. If you've been in the workplace for less than five years, you'll want to list some awards and grades. If you've been working for more than five years, education should be at the end of your résumé and doesn't need to be as detailed. Simply include the school name, city, state, degree, and year graduated.
